AT&T internet’s 3G wireless broadband coverage is about what you’d expect – neither as evanescent as the morning dew, nor as immutable and reliable as the earth beneath your feet. No – it’s somewhere in between, with the degree of “in between-ness” relating to the proximity of your mobile device to a city.

It’s been said countless times by folk other than me, but I’m going to weigh in my penny’s worth anyway: when can we people who don’t live in cities have decent broadband speeds, please? To be fair, though, AT&T internet makes it pretty clear that this is what’s going on. The company points out on its coverage map that the 3G mobile broadband system is broadly available throughout all metropolitan areas where AT&T has a presence – and that everywhere else gets EDGE.

So what does all this mean for 4G coverage? Exactly the same, I would imagine. It’s a simple question of economics, both for the service provider and the end user. Stringing out the cables and masts that you’d need to get 4G out into the sticks would cost a fortune, so it probably isn’t ever going to happen. But then that’s the whole point of living in the country, right?

Well, not necessarily. Depends who you are. I live here because I want to, I moved here in fact to get away from all the speed and noise of the city. The people who were born here, not so much. So maybe they deserve a shot at 3G, or 4G coverage in our area. I don’t know. All I’m saying is that I chose to leave 3G (as it was then, 4G is coming in now in the “nearest” city to us, which is 200 miles away) behind – whereas my neighbours don’t even know what it is.

So come on, AT&T internet – let’s be honest about our coverage intentions for the future, in plain English. Currently AT&T (and it isn’t just them by the way, everyone uses this kind of language) say that their heavy hitting coverage is “expanding rapidly” and point out that EDGE is its national high speed internet connection. Anyone who’s ever used EDGE will tell you that’s worth several laughs – see the speeds I quoted above.

So the result is simple. In the city, and in areas near to cities, AT&T internet’s top dog service enjoys stellar coverage, super fast speeds and all the fun of the fair. Everywhere else – not so much.
